What should I consider when selecting products to sell on Etsy?

If you want to start your own Etsy store it’s important to do research about the Etsy platform and what’s already out there. You can certainly learn a lot by browsing other shops that are doing well and paying attention to how they take their photos, write their content and structure their stores.

When selecting which products to sell, the best thing to do is to find a niche. It’s good to have knowledge of what the best selling products are but if you go up against a huge Etsy shop and try to sell the exact same product it’s likely you will not do very well. You need to consider the competition on Etsy for that product and how you can offer something a little different. This is where a niche becomes so important. When starting any business it’s important to consider your USP or Unique Selling Point. What can you offer that will make the customers keep coming back to you rather than your competition? A lot of people make the mistake of undercutting their competitors, in other words they make their low prices the USP. The issue with this is it’s not a good long term strategy and it only works in the short term. A better way to do it would be to make your shop stand out from the start. You don’t have to have a totally unique product to offer a USP, you just need to have an offering that is different enough to entice customers.

Etsy Copyright

If you are producing handmade items it’s important to consider Etsy and copyright issues. Copyright law protects the work of artists, musicians, writers and broadcasters. Their work is protected by copyright law which means you cannot redistribute the work or sell it without the permission of the person who produced it. A lot of large brands also trademark their logos and brand names which means you can’t use their logo or branding without their permission. For this reason it’s important to avoid making items that feature copyrighted or trademarked material unless you have applied for a licence to sell it. This would include making items that feature: Disney characters, sports teams or brand names such as Coca-Cola, Starbucks etc.

If you design your business right you can certainly do well on Etsy. It’s a good platform to sell on that has a unique audience compared to other marketplaces.
